Mayor Jeff Mims

Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr. was elected Mayor of Dayton in 2021 after serving on the Dayton City Commission for six years, with a distinguished history of public service prior to elected office.
Jeff Mims was the 3rd District Representative for the Ohio School Board. As the past president of the Dayton Board of Education, where he initiated the building of the new 7-12 Belmont High School with all union and local labor. After retiring from Dayton Public Schools with more than 38 years of service, serving most recently as Director of Government and Community Relations and Compliance. His diverse work within the district included garnering support for equitable funding of Ohio's public schools, and his efforts helped pave the way for Ohio's New School Facilities Program and the $528 million building of new Dayton Public Schools. He was elected President of the Dayton Education Association (Dayton Teachers’ Union) for six consecutive terms. As President of the DEA, Mr. Mims negotiated the district's first multi-year contract between the DEA and the Dayton Board of Education.
For the past 40 years, whether as a teacher, a coach, a community volunteer, or an elected official, Jeffrey Mims has committed to making the city of Dayton and the Dayton Public Schools strong partners in developing a "Championship City and School District" and improving the quality of life for Dayton citizens through education. As a City Commissioner, he worked with Senator Sherrod Brown to start the first My Brothers Keeper chapter launched in the state of Ohio, and in 2024 was awarded a Canary Award from Senator Brown in honor of his work. Since becoming Mayor, he was named the chair of the National League of Cities Mayor’s Education Task Force.
Jeff Mims earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Art, Art Education, and Industrial Technology from Central State University (1973) and a Master of Science degree in Education from Wright State University (1975).
Additionally, he is a Vietnam veteran and recipient of the Air Force Accommodation Medal and the “Air Force Roger Award” in their worldwide talent contest as a drum soloist. He is a life member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a Member of Prince Hall Chapter, Unity 115, Central State University Alumni Association, a Life Member of NAACP, and a constant mentor with Dayton’s youth in golf.
Jeff Mims is a National Education Association Human Relations Awardee, American Federation of Teachers “Friend of Education Awardee” a Dayton Top Ten African American Male, and an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority "Strength and Perseverance" awardee and in 2014, he was inducted into CSU’s Achievement Hall of Fame.
He is happily married to Toni Mims. He has two children, Cory (Monique) and LaDawn. Both are proud graduates of Dayton Public Schools and graduates of higher and post-graduate education programs. He also has three grandchildren.
